Season two is coming in June or July!
You can be forgiven if USA Network’s MR. ROBOT snuck up on you. It did to a lot of people. I regrettably fell behind and had to catch up, binging the first season in a few days. What I discovered was a incredibly well-crafted show. It stars Rami Malek as Elliot Alderson, a security engineer and hacker who gets involved with “F Society”: a group of cybercriminals who look to take down a fictional conglomerate, E Corp (dubbed Evil Corp. by the characters).
MR. ROBOT is addicting television. What’s most impressive is that the show doesn’t dumb anything down for the viewer. They delve into some pretty heady topics regarding government, and mega-corporation business, and hacking (something I know zero about), but feel fine about using the proper verbiage and terms. The storyline from season one also touched on some real life events, like the hacks of Sony and Ashley Madison, incorporating those flawlessly into the narrative. Rumours are that the FBI’s inquisition into Apple, regarding the locked terrorist’s iPhone will at least be touched on in season two.
Along with Malek, Christian Slater, Carly Chaikin, and Portia Doubleday also headline the cast. Martin Wallström plays Tyrell Wellick, E Corp’s Senior VP, and man, is he amazing in it. He has some knowledge of hacking as well, and is the perfect foil (and maybe partner? It’s ambiguous.) to Elliot. BD Wong is also in a few episodes as the transgender Whiterose, leader of an anarchist group, the Dark Army.
MR. ROBOT goes to some extremely dark places. There is violence and murder. Elliot has a severe social anxiety problem that he deals with in a myriad of ways. There is an overarching storyline (season one has 10 episodes), but there were also side-narratives that made each episode fresh and exciting. I can’t recommend this show enough. A new trailer for the second season just came out. Do yourself a favour and catch up so you’re ready for the summer.
