If the source material is any indication, Lara Croft is about to have a rough go of things.
Lara Croft and her Tomb Raider franchise has been around since 1996. It's included seventeen games (if you include IOS and Android), two films starring Angelina Jolie, and countless other merchandise. But in this fast paced world of ours, we need something fresh, so enter Alicia Vikander.
I believe I read that the 2018 film will revolve around (at least loosely) the reboot Tomb Raider video game from 2013. In that, Lara and a crew are aboard a ship that crashes on a mysterious island. There are native tribes, boobytraps, and beaucoup hardships that Lara goes through, both physically and emotionally.
Here's what Vikander herself says about the character:
“When I was asked to take on this role I got really excited—Lara Croft is a truly iconic character,“ she told Vanity Fair. “I think people can identify with her for lots of different reasons, but for me I very much see her as a model for many young women. She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past. She also has a fantastic mix of traits—tough, smart, vulnerable, plus she’s kick ass! She is also uniquely different to other characters I have taken on previously. It’s a lot of fun trying to get into Lara’s head and the challenge of getting to grips with such a physical role is an element of this project that I find an absolute thrill.”
The first pictures from the shoot are online now and they look to be in line with what the game had to offer. I really like the hiring of Vikander. She has (albeit an early glance) the exact vibe necessary, and she already looks like she's getting roughed up. The game offered a pretty decent story, so I am excited to see where it goes.
