The endearment level is off the charts!
I just keep watching the trailer for Taika Waititi’s HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE. Waititi made the very funny THINGS WE DO IN THE SHADOWS back in 2014, and his follow up looks to have that same type of goofy humor, but with less vampires. In the next year and a half, Waititi is also scribing Pixar’s MOANA, and helming THOR: RAGNAROK, so it’s going to be a big couple of years for the New Zealand filmmaker.
WILDERPEOPLE tells the story of Kevin Baker, a foster kid who bounces from house to house due to his volatile behavior. He eventually settles with a Hector and Bella (Sam Neill and Rima Te Wiata), but soon finds himself back on the lam, this time along with Hector.
This looks to have the perfect amount of comedy and heart, and bears similarities to SWISS ARMY MAN. It’s like they’re each other’s spirit animals. When I first watched the trailer I thought I heard Kevin “Bacon” instead of “Baker,” and it reminded me when I lived in NYC I knew a little girl named Bianca Bacon, and a little boy named Pete Pizza. My friends and I all thought it would be fitting if they ended up together so Bianca’s name would be Bianca Bacon Pizza. True story.
Anyway, HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, so expect at least a limited release sometime in the fall.
