“Conner, did you take a shit in the Anne Frank house?”
It’s probably not a stretch to say that the Lonely Island’s schtick isn’t for everyone. One thing you can’t argue, however, is the pop culture footprint it has left with their various entries. I haven’t checked, but “Dick in a Box” is probably already in the Oxford Dictionary.
The trio is back with POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING, a ludicrous title for a preposterous looking film. That said, I’m totally onboard. I’m in the minority when I say that I loved HOT ROD, the 2007 film that saw Andy Samberg play a doofus stuntman who decides to jump over 15 school buses in order to raise money for his stepdad’s (Ian McShane) heart surgery, just so he can finally beat him up.
POPSTAR follows the antics of Conner (Samberg), a douchey musician who does dumb things. That looks like it’s pretty much it. But that’s all I need. Akiva Shaffer and Jorma Taccone fill out the Island trio, and dually direct. Expect lots of cameos and fart jokes. And heart! You don’t write the song, “Jack Sparrow” without a whole lot of heart.
