It's longer than a teaser.
Yesterday we had the briefest of looks at the newest installment into the STAR WARS universe. I wasn’t expecting much in regards to content, but was happily surprised when we got a whole 90 seconds of Gareth Edwards’s realized world.
Felicity Jones is front and center as Jyn Erso, an orphaned career criminal who gets recruited into (perhaps?) a more righteous organization, ultimately to steal the plans of the Death Star.
Edwards nails the large scale shots that made him famous from MONSTERS and GODZILLA (just look at the AT-AT battle), and as usual there are still plenty of intimate moments that will make this a film to see come December, 2016.
Ben Mendelsohn looks menacing as a yet-to-be-named Empirical officer (maybe General Hux’s father?); my favourite is Donnie Yen who who looks to take out an entire squad of Stormtroopers with a bo staff. Donnie Yen needs no lightsaber.
It’s a great first look! Some obvious tie-ins with the Death Star and John Williams’s score, but there appears to be enough fresh faces and ideas that ROGUE ONE should stand on its own.
